Dressing up: unconventional layers

31 Mar

I don’t know what has changed in recent years, but I don’t feel as comfortable wearing strapless dresses anymore. It may just also have something to do with knowing that the weather in San Francisco will force me to wear a sweater/coat over it, it kind of defeats the purpose of wearing something strapless. I beat the feeling by deciding to layer the dress with a top, I may have not otherwise worn together. There is something about the casualness of the top with the dressiness of the dress that made me enjoy this outfit so much more.

There was also something I really liked about mixing the brushed watercolor print of the dress with the polka dots of the top.

Now if I could just figure out a way to make these shoes more comfortable

Dress: Ali Roi from Jeremy’s SF (similar style). Top: Uniqlo heattech turtleneck. Tights: Wolford (similar style). Wedges: Elizabeth and James (different color). Ring: Kenneth Cole, gift from sister. Earrings: Shotwell SF.

Now, to bite the bullet and get a haircut.

Getting a chance to dress up like this totally makes up for the boring outfits I wear during the week to work.

Kind of no…I went to a blog event, but by the time I got there, it was over so I left :-/

    I dig the layers!

I’ve been trying to figure out how to wear a blouse under a strapless dress. I’m not much of a fan of strapless dresses in cold weather, but this combo you put together makes it work so well. I’m guessing the blouse underneath has to be really fitted.

It’s not really fair to cross out so many dresses during winter, or in our case in San Francisco  most of the year since it’s always cold. Now I need to find more printed turtlenecks :)

I love this outfit! The small polkadots look great with the print, and I like the layers. I don’t really wear strapless anymore (not that I *ever* wore strapless things that often), which is a shame because there are some pretty awesome strapless dresses out there. Great solution!

Strapless was not really my thing either, but I got this dress on a great sale at Jeremy’s that it just had to come home with me strapless or not.

I love this outfit Eli!  You know, I don’t think I’ve ever tried to layer something under a strapless dress.  I’ve definitely layered over one, but never under.  Definitely something I need to try! :)

Now all I want to do is buy printed long sleeve tops to wear under dresses! I WISH we had an Uniqlo nearby.

I feel you, for sure. Layers like this are so necessary if you live somewhere that’s cold for much of the year! I don’t know if I’ve ever tried a turtleneck for this kind of combo though — it looks awesome. :)

It’s giving me more ideas on how to wear dresses I don’t wear anymore, now if I only had bought more Uniqlo printed turtlenecks when I was in NYC a while ago!

Ooh I like the polka dots and prints together, that dress is gorg!

In my ideal wardrobe, I’d wear striped tops and polka dot pants all day long :)

Too bad the shoes aren’t comfortable because they LOOK amazing!

    • http://thrifteye.com/ Eli

The shoes need a platform, they fee like you’re walking on your tippy toes! It’s a shame because I really like the small details and the texture of the leather. I can only wear them for short distances.

Oh my gosh, I’ve been going back to my really old posts to fix something and seeing how different I used to dress when I lived in Vegas. Definitely showed lots more skin. This damn cold weather!! Not sure if I’ll be able to go tomorrow cause I have soooo much work :(

I love how you styled this. A turtleneck or long sleeved shirt under a strapless dress is, in my book, the only acceptable way to wear a strapless dress. I’ve always hated them–something about them is so prom-like and boring. And the constant tugging and worrying that you’re going to flash the world doesn’t help much either.

Great dress, you look really nice! ^^ I should try this sometime, formal dress & one layer underneath instead of some bolero or jacket. :)

Ahh, will you judge me if I cry when you cut your hair? It’s so pretty! And isn’t it a shame that the cutest shoes always seem to be the most uncomfortable? Also, I think I’m gonna have to try layering a top under a strapless dress! Love this look on you!

Well I love how you styled the long-sleeved top under this dress! As if the dress wasn’t cool enough already, the contrasting polka dots somehow make it cooler!

    These wedges are PERFECT!
