The dress my mother made me

I perhaps haven’t shared enough on this blog, the clothing my mom has taken time out of her life to make for me- as a child, and even as an early teen, whatever was not a hand-me-down, was made by mom. I was explaining to someone the other day, how I had custom outfits which is pretty cool, but so did my sisters. We could dress up as triplets if we wanted to; all because my mom made it. She made a lot of her own clothes, and to this day continues to.

Needless to say, she is my inspiration for many things. Since I’ve moved away, I don’t get as many custom things made for me like I used to. You have to pick fabric, choose trimmings, measurements, fittings, etc…that if you’re not around, it takes a really long time. You can see HERE some of the dresses I’ve tagged that my mom made and HERE some of the tops she made. But, I’m fairly certain I have lots more things in my closet by her that I’ve just never documented on the blog. I also found this old post (holy cow a few years ago), where I took a picture of her wearing a dress she made for herself.

It’s getting closer to Mother’s Day and I’m getting nostalgic that I may not get a chance to see her this year for the day (it falls during my finals week, ugh). So I’ve been wearing the things she made me, to feel closer to her, even though she is far away.

This dress took a very long time to make because after we found this yellow stripey fabric that I LOVE, we couldn’t come to a consensus on how it would look, I also wanted a really bright zipper (think hot pink) but she advised against it, then it was too long (I wore it only once at the original mid calf length) and had to send it back to her to make it a little shorter. NOW I’m satisfied with it, NOW I would want to wear it every day. It has this Marc by Marc Jacobs feel to it, and I wanted to dress it up with some (more than usual) bold jewelry, but also some colored tights, and shoes to match.

If you have your mama close by, don’t wait until mother’s day to tell her you love her (and dad if you can too!)

I love that your Mom made your dress because it means so much more than just fabric and a zipper!! That’s too cool.  My Mom used to make our clothes too when we were little.  She doesn’t do a lot of sewing nowadays but instead encourages me to make my own clothes.  She does some altering now and then.  Maybe I’ll ask her to make me a dress again.  Great post!

My cat is gorgeous, I feel silly for posting her in the last two posts but I love her so much.

Aww, that’s so sweet! I love clothes with memories attached to them. My mom made smocked dresses for me as a child and I hope she has them stored somewhere so I can pass them down to my own (hypothetical) kids someday.

I have a few hand made baby things too, it’s always nice to have those! Even if they’re just for future hypothetical children 🙂

  • It’s so wonderful that you have custom made clothes by your mom. They must feel so special, and this dress is adorable. I love the turquoise jewels with it.

It’s a nice feeling, I even have a few things that are from the 90’s that I would NEVER wear again but it feels awful thinking about getting rid of them.

You are so lucky that your mom is so talented and creative. It’s so much fun to be able to mix in in such personal items of clothing into your wardrobe. I’m loving that last picture of you so much! Your furniture is awesome.
