Back to school, back to the office

13 Aug

My summer vacation has had a nice run and will soon be coming to an end. I work for a school district, so it’s back to school for me soon and I’m getting awful flashbacks of being a kid again (but really, will also going back to school to finish up my last semester of grad school, eep!). I want this year to be full of more creative outfits at work, but still be work appropriate and comfortable.

I thought that the perfect place to start would be with a blue dress. When black becomes basic, it is easy to fall back to it over and over, but blue is just as easy to wear. One of these dresses I wear often because of the straight shape and versatility, but the other is a little more extravagant for work, but I’m going to make an effort to wear it more often.

Nice details on the collar, but also buttons run down the back.

Dress: Banana Republic thrifted.

The H&m dress can be accessorized with any color or pattern belt to change it up. While the  Banana Republic doesn’t really need more accessories since the ruffles are enough.

I thrifted both of these dresses, and that’s the great thing about thrift stores. I’m sure I could walk into any one and pick out a great blue dress right off the rack. (Especially Goodwill stores which carry a lot of Target deadstock, and Target has lots of work friendly dresses).

Do you have a go to blue dress? Whether it be for work or fun? I have my own fun blue dress that I wore just a few weeks ago.

I love the ruffles. Thanks for the heads up about banana republic for work. I’m always at a loss of what to wear to work (I teach). I shall be making  a trip to the buffalo exchange soon!

Absolutely, and yes Buffalo Exchange is my favorite place. I like dangerously close to one!!

the h&m dress is so perfect because it can just become anything. i mean the cut looks amazing on you and  even with only one simple accessory, it still shines.

even though i haven’t been on vacation, i still hate the end of summer. no matter how many years i haven’t been in school the feelings associated with September dont seem to fade.

Hmmm…come to think of it I don’t have a simple blue dress!! I guess it’s time to go thrifting.  I agree that the Goodwill has lots of ready for work outfits that can easily be accessorized.  It’s just having that “eye”!!  I love the H&M dress paired with the leopard print belt (I just got a similar belt from H&M).  I’m so jealous that you had a little summer vacation…makes me want to work for the school system.

It’s fun to have summer vacation, but not when you don’t get paid for it :(

Ooh, I’m all about your hair!

If you love this hairdo, wait until you see the pony tail I have coming up. It’s starting to look like a fauxytail!!

Love that ruffly dress Eli. Last year I made a conscious effort to bring more fun into my work attire – basically meaning I keep dressing like myself, rather than try to manufacture some office-friendly style that’s just not me. It’s much easier that way!

It’s so easy to just fall back to boring outfits, I constantly have to remind myself even though I blog!

Wow, your last term of grad school! I remember that feeling this past January – both scary and exciting. Also, I just love that top thrifted dress. And it looks so cute with the leopard belt.

I work at a school district too and have that problem of wanting to be cute but still work appropriate. Personally, so long as the skirt is the right length, I seem to be able to make it work…

The blue dress(es) look great! I especially like the very professional (yet retro) vibe of the first one.
