Mix master: how to mix tights and high heels

2 Aug

If you ever see me running around town for an event or party and it’s below 75 degrees, chances are you’re going to see me wearing tights. And not just any ordinary tights, I love to wear colorful and patterned ones, it makes things more fun right? A while back I went to a wedding and took a look at a group photo where all the girls were bare legged and I was the only one wearing my crazy pantyhose and the look stood out so much more than everyone else! Be seen and be heard!

I’ll go ahead and tell you now, that when I can, I buy quality. I love Wolford brand pantyhose because they’re made for the apocalypse, they can withstand anything! If you can afford them at full price, do so. But I always try to wait until they go on super sale. It sure beats buying a very cheap pair of pantyhose that rip or run after the first few wears. Investing a little bit of money in this may be worth it.

And for some no-brainers in maintaining your tights. First, make sure you cut your nails, toes and fingers. Long toe nails will probably be the best way to rip your pantyhose. But also making sure that your hand nails are filed so that you wont snag the hose as you put them on, I’ve learned my lesson the hard way! For my really nice tights, I keep them separate in ziplock sandwich bags so that they don’t get jumbled up in the drawer and risk getting snagged on something.

Now for the mixing and matching. I like basics, but not necessarily together.

These Kate Spade tights have a gold glittery chevron pattern. I don’t have a lot of brown in my closet, so when I wear these, I like to pair them with neutral (or similar colored) shoes. Here, my snakeskin Fornarina heels work great.

These are my fun and colorful tights for the flowery trend, I got them at Forever 21 a while ago. They’re pretty loud on their own, so I wear them with a more basic shoe. These Elizabeth and James wedges are interesting enough, but don’t outshine the tights.

These geometric tights from Wolford are my answer to the fishnet tights. When I wear them, I actually like my tights and shoes to be similar, in this case my Yves Saint Laurent heels.

My sister gave me these fun peacock feather lace tights from Wolford, they’re incredibly beautiful and delicate. Because they’re so ornate and fancy, I’d like to wear them with a more casual shoe that tones it all down. I also like the contrast of the grey leather.

I wish I could wear these heart patterned tights from H&m more often, but you know, an occasion to rarely comes up. But when I do, I like to think I’m from Alice in Wonderland. Here I wear them with my velvet Fornarina heels, because red white and blue go so well together.

I love everything about these bondage Wolford tights. They are incredibly sexy but fun. So I think a sleek shoe that adds height goes well. Like these Yves Saint Laurent wedges.

Again, my sister knows me so well. She gave me these crazy Henry Holland tights, and I think I would wear them every day if I could. These also may be the ones that work with every single type of shoe. I think the pointyness of my Gap heels accommodate the pointyness of the stars.

If you’re the kind of person that doesn’t like tights or goes for basics, I urge you to come over to this side soon. It’s more fun :)

The shoes and tights mix and match the occasions, depending on how casual or dressy I have to be, sitting or walking has to be done. My goal is always to be comfortable (I often take the insoles from my running shoes and put them right into heels).

I always have my eye on interesting new designs for tights, and it always makes me excited to find a good deal on them but also finding new wear ways to wear these (and those that aren’t shown). Where do you stand?

Oh no! I kinda hate my toes too, cause I have one freakishly long big toe. But I decided to not care and just let it hang out :)

Hold on. Below 75??? 75 is summer! shorts, tanks, ect. you must enjoy those days and bare legs.
Tight weather is anything below 57 in my book.

But maybe that is because I got sick of them a few winters back and rebelled against wearing them last year until November. I was bare legged on thanksgiving.

But I do love those peacock tights, they are pretty fab.

Well, the thing is on 75 degree days, that only lasts for like two hours. Mornings and nights usually end up freezing again! Or foggy, or windy, or a combination of it. Those ideal and perfect weather days are far and few between :( Good thing I work outside the city so I get to enjoy the sun a little more often :)

I love tights! Here in San Diego, though, there are really only a few months in which it makes sense to wear them, so when that time rolls around, I wear them every day. I mostly wear really bright colors like red, teal, and mustard but I would like to add a few more patterned styles to my collection. These are great! And by the way, I LOVE Wolford! They are so luxurious! I gave a couple pairs to my mom 3 years ago and hers are still going strong. I bought myself a couple too but sadly I had to learn the hard way about fingernails and such. One pair got snagged on the zipper of a boot :(

Luckily (unlucky?) enough SF is always pretty damn cold, I could probably wear tights all year round! I have my “fancier” ones like these but I have a small collection of opaque tights from DKNY in more neutral colors that I typically wear for work (basic colors like black, navy, and grey)

Thank you, all it takes is a little patience to find the right pair. I’ve paid no more than $15 for my Wolfords!!

My mom always wears a pair of cotton gloves when she is putting on her stockings. That way if her nails aren’t done they aren’t snagged. My sister & I do the same thing. :-)

That is an incredibly smart idea! Thanks for the tip, I think I’m gonna have to run and get some gloves soon to try it :)

You have the most amazing collection of cool tights. I only have one neat pair (lacy like your peacock ones) and get more comments on them. Tight really can punch up an outfit.

    • http://www.thrifteye.com/ Eli

They do, I’ve just been collecting them over the years, waiting for the right pair or price. I didn’t pay more than $15 for my Wolford ones, but know they will last a really long time. In comparison to some DKNY ones I bought recently at Marshalls and they all ripped after one wear!

That peacock/gray combo is just killer. I love that you could build six different looks off of each of these.

Okay Eli, I think I need for you to send me some tights now! All the styles are so pretty. I absolutely love wearing tights. I love wearing tights in the winter time! Especially patterned ones :-)

    • http://www.thrifteye.com/ Eli

I guess my tights post may be a little ahead of itself since fall is some months away, but I’ll be damned if it isn’t so cold all the time in San Francisco! It kind of sucks, I could wear tights every day if I wanted to, I guess that’s the bright side :)

  • Erika Cisneros

    great styles,love it

  • http://twitter.com/vivianwilde Vivian Wilde

The only one I would ever wear are the striped ones and probably the square fishnet ones! But that’s just me, I have an hate for patterned things that go on the legs haha! This is for trousers, leggings and tights more than anything else. I just find that plain legs are so beautiful as they are, that putting so much stuff on them is useless. But I’m not  a big fan of patterns in general so I guess it doesn’t count! But I’m getting better at it :D Anyway you are awesome at mixing and matching tights and shoes! I especially appreciate the stars+nude and the hearts+blue shoes :D

    • http://www.thrifteye.com/ Eli

Well, half the other time I’m wearing sold color tights. But this makes for a much more interesting post! :)
