Something old and something new

Something old:

Some days I have to withdraw some really old books, mostly because they’re falling apart or really damaged. It’s bittersweet because they don’t make books anymore like they used to. Old books really take beatings from kids. Now they fall apart after being checked out two or three times. So when it was time to get rid of this really old set of Little House of the Prairie books, I had to take a photo to remember them forever.

Something new:

So now that we have Uniqlo in San Francisco, I find myself gravitating towards their clothes. They have great basics, a fantastic line of other basics made for layering to keep warm (Heattech) and some quirky things that aren’t overly trendy or for really young girls. I’m sold.

Top and pants: Uniqlo (you can shop online!) Sweater: Halogen. Boot: Fornarina (old, from Las Vegas store).

It’s a shame that books like that are in library limbo – nobody wants to read them because they’re so old, but nobody wants to get rid of them either because they’re so old.

    ohhh cute polka dot pants!!
I totally get not wanting to get rid of something old because everything they make these days seems to be of poorer and poorer quality. At least this is not likely a conundrum our kids will ever face because anything you or I buy new will be complete garbage in a couple years.

I remember stopping by San Jose State’s library at the right time when they were literally giving away a bunch of beautiful old books. I ended up with a collection of short stories edited by Alfred Hitchcock called ‘Stories That Scared Even Me.’ Obviously, the best read ever. How do you not end up adopting them all yourself and taking them home?!

Oh, bittersweet indeed those are going off the shelves. I mean, I assume they got newer copies because the Little House on the Prairie seem to be classics, but these particular copies seem like very pretty copies.

Those books are so pretty! Now I’m curious, what does the library do with books like these?

Also, saw your haircut above- it looks great!

So libraries usually do a few things with really old books – our library is not allowed to turn a profit on old books (I think it’s a public funding thing), so I had to recycle these :(

But most public libraries will put them in a bookstore or booksale if they’re not too bad. Some may even sell them online as vintage. But if the condition is really bad, they go to the recycle/trash.
