It’s cold everywhere, and I just got my hands on these photos from the summer, so I’m defying reason and posting these pictures instead to remind me of warmer times :)
As a child, I once saw an episode of Reading Rainbow that was about oceans and more importantly, otters. I spent most of my child and teenhood then dreaming about being a marine biologist just so I could work with otters. Even making plans to go to college at Cal State Monterey Bay (otters are their mascot!). And then in high school, I took a biology class and quickly realized that my other interests (math and writing) outweighed my passion for science, and I left this dream go.
I was, and still am, obsessed with otters. In fact, I think my obsession was perhaps more with Reading Rainbow itself (which makes sense now, giving that I’m a librarian!). And I’ve long wanted to see the Monterey Bay Aquarium myself as a full circle. They do so much work to research and protect the animals of the Bay, especially otters.
Looking at these photos and then at the current temperatures makes me want to crawl into bed and never come out. I’m just grateful we’re not in snow like most others!
And while I did love visiting the otters, I’m by no means a supporter of keeping other large animals in captivity. The Monterey Bay Aquarium houses no other mammals. They partner with local marine biologists and organizations to research and rehabilitate some of the other animals so that they can go back into the open.
