Am I too old to wear shorts?

I used to be that person that would never be caught dead in shorts – I hated them throughout my teenage years and most of my adulthood. Exactly why? I’m not quite sure, I like how they look on other people, but always hated them on myself. Back in the day I wasn’t allowed to shave my legs in junior high, when the rest of the girls around me were getting acrylic nail manicures and stealing lipsticks from the local pharmacy to be cool. And here I was, feeling like the girl with the hairy legs. I could attribute the change in heart to two different things. First, was moving to Las Vegas, where you quickly learned that no matter how ugly you feel, shorts are an absolute must in the summer. Second, having a blog has taught me to push the limits of what I thought I could and couldn’t wear.

So in the last few years, I’ve finally felt comfortable wearing shorts! But now I get this creeping feeling that maybe shorts are for the really young? Are my shorts TOO short? I guess the self-consciousness of some things never really goes away. But here I am, I busted out the shorts – because we’re in an in-between weather, I’ll sometimes wear shorts with tights underneath like this, just in case it gets too cold or windy (which did happen this day).

After working on this post for the last two hours, and thinking about this shorts subject the whole time…I just feel like I had some sort of therapy session!

  • I really like this entire outfit- the shorts are not too short, but don’t look dowdy either. It is a slightly tough/rough look.

I think that I spend my weekday/workdays SO formal, that I take my dressdown weekends seriously 🙂 I’d like to think that way, no one would recognize me from the library

  • Oh shorts are my favorite so I hope that there’s really never an age that’s too old! Shorts definitely not too short and I love the patchwork.

The shorts are so cool! For whatever reason, the stylist couldn’t return them. They’re from Urban Outfitters, I guess they’re still doing their Urban Renewal line!

  • Never thought there was an age limit on shorts – but they look fabulous on you! Love the whole outfit. 🙂

That’s why I’m sort of embarrassed about admitting to my feelings about shorts! I like them other people too! Thank you for your kind words 🙂

I’ve been having the exact same thought lately! But I think I’ve landed on there not being an age limit for shorts. Plus they look awesome on you….so I say keep wearin’ them.

I’ll keep wearing them as long as the weather allows me. We get a lot of fog in the “Summer”

  • TOTALLY TOTALLY relate. Ironically, I’m wearing shorts in my post today. But, it’s something that has taken me years (and I mean YEARS!) to be mentally comfortable to wear shorts. Sounds weird, but it’s true! I couldn’t stand the way I looked wearing shorts – especially through the tumultuous teenage years. I swore up and down they looked better on everyone else than on me. Compound that with my anxiety of how pale I was compared to the kids around me and I felt exponentially conscious. I lived in SF so it wasn’t an issue that often since shorts-weather happened for about two days before I could hide in layers. Then, I moved to LA. Oy. That was a style challenge since I still refused to wear shorts (and I gained weight!). Finally, as a bona vide working adult, I have become mentally prepared but, is it too late? It’s probably me…over-analyzing…everything…like usual. =)

  • I do like to wear shorts but when I look back at the itsy bitsy shorts I used to wear in high school, I cringe a bit. Oh well, I’ll chalk it up to being young! Now I prefer shorts that are a bit longer in length. I definitely don’t think we’re too old to wear shorts in general, but I have shied away from the teeny tiny shorts!

  • You look wonderful! You’re timeless; never too old for shorts!

  • Paisley

You are so not too old for shorts…you look adorable in them! I think some shorts can be way too short and silly but these are adorable. I can totally relate to jr. high short-wearing woes…I couldn’t shave my legs either and dreaded P.E. when we had to wear gym shorts.

I’ve felt the same way about shorts for years. I think I feel they are cut to high for me & so they all look like Daisy Dukes on me.

Yesterday I found a very cute print pair at Banana Republic for $8 bucks – heck anything at BR that is priced under $10 & is clothing is worth the trying on. I liked them, although they are cut a bit longer & cuffed. I had to buy them. First time in 20yrs I’ve ever spent under $35 in that store 🙂

I like this outfit. I think you look great. As with any type of clothing it always look better if your comfortable wearing it. 🙂

You look great. I love the 90s vibe you’re rocking. Very punk rock Kathleen Hanna-esque.You have nice long legs, I say go for it more!

Haven’t been here in a while, you’re looking fabulous as usual and I love the new look of the blog! Hope you’re doing well in San Fran! xox –Sara
