Beauty routine

It’s been a good while since I’ve done a makeup/beauty post!

In the last two years, I’ve done a bigger revamping of my morning and night routine. I used to just slather on jojoba oil on my face day and night, that was it. But I realized that I couldn’t just do that anymore (if the puffy circles under my eyes were any indication.)

While I still use the jojoba oil every single morning, it’s everything that I do after and up until bedtime that’s a little different. I try to make sure I wear sunscreen every morning, this one by MD Solar Sciences is awesome! It came as a tiny sample in my Birchbox a while back and I loved it. It has a mineral feel to it, not oily like other sunscreens, so it feels great on your face. The best thing I can say, is that I once accidentally smudged a BIG dollop in my eye and if you’ve ever worn sunscreen, I was ready for pain. But…I don’t know how this happened, it didn’t hurt. That alone sold me forever!

I’ve switched away from wearing blush on my face to this liquid stuff. I’ve realized it lasts longer! I have a tiny sample of the Benefit stuff above, but I also use this Korean Peri tint stuff.

I take showers at night, so I use coconut oil from the grocery store on my body and hair! Smells great and cheap! Works better than lotion or other hair stuff, I’ve found. To get my makeup off, I wash my face with this other Korean brand The Face Shop (I use their CC cream as foundation) ricewater oil cleanser – the oil base washes all makeup traces perfectly. Once every few weeks I put on this Malin + Goetz clay mask – let it dry and when you wash it off, the tiny clay beads exfoliate your face. I just switched over from the Tsubaki oil drops to Rosehip Oil. They both have similar night hydrating results, but the rosehip oil smells strong (in case you have a sensitive nose.) Every other night I boost my night oil with Paula’s Choice serum drops. And if my skin feels extra thirsty (which it has ALL winter!) I put on this H20 night cream.

Sounds like a long routine, but it’s not. But, most of my routine is oil based. I believe in oils to keep your skin healthy and hydrated – just know that this may not work for everyone. Questions?! Let me know!

And for the last difficult to easy, holiday makeup transformation, I take on the green eye shadow. Which after blue, is the hardest color to wear sometimes (blue eye shadow will forever be the most impossible color to wear!). Green eye shadow by itself is just not that fun.

Using a L’ancome sample palette for eye shadow that my sister gave me (came free with a purchase). Benefit’s Hello Flawless foundation and mini They’re Real mascara. Urban Decay’s Glide on pencil. And L’oreal Infallible 737 persistent plum (the lipsticks in the Infallible line are THE best long wear lipsticks I’ve ever tried).

The trick here is that when you have an eye shadow that has a metallic tint to it, you can gently dip your brush in a little bit of water. This has a few positives to it – it intensifies your color, making it more rich and metallic, but also it makes the shadow last longer! I thought adding black eyeliner would also make the green more fancy for a night out, especially for a NYE party! In hindsight, I probably should have used a red lipstick instead of this dark plum one, but oh well.

Now…to figure out what I’ll actually do on NYE!

Holiday makeup ideas: purple eyeshadow

Thanks for the great feedback on the other post – next, I thought I’d try an equally difficult color, purple! I used the same Nyx palette here to find the right purple.

Purple alone looks like I got punched in the face, not quite the look I’m going for.

I have this awesome purple liner in a Birchbox box a while back and have always loved it! So I thought the purple on purple would work well together. I also wanted to go with a berry color lip here to compliment the purple hues, I think it worked well together!

Pink was a difficult enough color to wear, would you rock the purple eye-shadow instead? Maybe they aren’t your style? Wait til you see the next color I have up tomorrow!

Holiday makeup ideas: pink eyeshadow

makeup

As the New Year approaches, I thought it would fun to play with some makeup again (you can see my past makeup tagged posts here) to explore some ideas on holiday makeup but also to challenge myself to use colors that are in my book, quite difficult to wear. So I will be experimenting with three different color eye-shadows, in this post I chose to use pink!

These warm colors are difficult to wear because it can easily turn into a look that says I’m wearing makeup for the first time or hey, I’m in the seventh grade wearing my mom’s makeup. Worse being that lately, I’m sooo guilty of wearing the same eye-shadow Monday through Friday for work! It’s a challenge to break out of your own box, but playing around with makeup is too fun to not experiment!

Here is my base face – foundation is on, under eye concealer applied, and eyebrows filled in a bit (if you’re dying to see me with no makeup, explore that makeup link in the first paragraph).

Sorry, had to capture this photo with my iPhone.
Nyx 3 color eyeshadow TS06, I used the far right color called Prune. Revlon Colorburst matte in Showy Flamboyante (heeey) #220. Benefit’s They’re Real mini mascara. And an older Urban Decay palette – I used the Half Baked.

So as to try something new, I thought an exaggerated cat eye swoop just in the pink eye-shadow would be fun. But see how it looks kinda plain just as the pink color? That’s where adding the rest of the details really completes the whole look.

Add a little bit of gold shadow to your lower lash line to get some contrast. A dramatic mascara makes your eyes pop. This one is new to me, I like to buy sample size mascaras at Ulta so I can find one I like without investing in a whole tube. Add and equally bright lipstick to compliment the eye-shadow and you’re set!
