Hippie Modernism at Berkeley Art Museum

It has been a good while since I’ve done a museum post! As a lover of museums, I always love photographing special exhibits (and showing them here), especially when they’re within the fashion realm! The only problem is that…most of the shows I’ve recently seen prohibited photos (grr!) which is good and bad. I love capturing moments, but I do feel like some people get so absorbed taking photos, they don’t even enjoy the exhibits!

So when I had an opportunity to check out the Hippie Modernism exhibit at the Berkeley Art Museum, I was fascinated to see there were so many beautiful pieces connected to the hippie, peace & love, freedom of art movements! The best part, is that the museum is nestled in an awesome neighborhood of Berkeley near the University with SO many awesome restaurants nearby! I try to make a big loop around without the camera first, and then go back and take pictures of what caught my eye.

At home with monsters: Guillermo Del Toro at the LACMA

In the midst of all the other billion museum posts, I run off to LA for a long weekend and visit yet another museum! I had to visit this Guillermo Del Toro exhibit, which proved to be the deliciously dark exhibit it promises! If you happen to find youself in the LA area, I would highly recommend visiting before it’s gone. GdT is an artist with a fantastic eye for┬áthe realm of film – so the exhibit was a beautiful blend of pieces from his movies, but also art that inspired it.

It was one of the more perfectly curated exhibits I had ever seen in my life! The pictures I took and share here, do the whole thing no justice – as I mostly only photographed the clothing and a few art pieces. But there was so much to see by so ┬ámany different artists! All things bugs, steampunk, goth, horror, spooky, macabre, ghouls, torture, fear, nightmares, morbid, but with a twist of humor thrown in.

MoMa

So a lot of my outings lately have been to museums. Sorry (not sorry.) I’m now the proud member of three different museums in San Francisco and cannot urge you enough to do something similar near you! In the long run it becomes affordable if you visit often (like I do) and you typically always have a bonus ticket to invite a friend – and what good friends wouldn’t take you up on an offer to visit world class museums for free?!

So when I got the chance to visit the SF MOMA for the first time, I jumped at the opportunity to get a membership. Solely for the fact that it’s also too large to enjoy in one whole day. So now I get to come back as much as I want for a whole year! I feel lucky.

I’ve been trying to figure out where one can wear a bright yellow, wool, mini skirt…and if a museum isn’t perfect, I don’t know where else you’d wear the damn thing?! I still can’t believe I found it at the thrift store! It’s by Sonia Rykiel, who seems to have just passed away (RIP)

Stanley Kubrick exhibit at Contemporary Jewish Museum

If you haven’t figured it out by now, I LOVE museums. Especially when they have exhibits with fashion elements. I didn’t know what to expect from seeing the Stanley Kubrick exhibit that’s been traveling, now visiting San Francisco at the Contemporary Jewish Museum. I thought it would of course be very film-centric, which it was – I didn’t expect to see the costumes there! I was blown away by their beauty, that I had to go back and take photos! I think film buffs, costume/fashion design lovers, and anyone will love this show!
