The Huntington

I recently was able to visit the Huntington Museum and Gardens for the first time in my life. I was blown away by the beauty of its grounds and exhibitions. As a dedicated museum lover, it made me wish it was the kind of place I was closer to. Part garden, part museum – it’s really the best of both my favorite worlds!

The other part of me was a “what was I thinking” moment when I dragged my sister and her baby out there in 100 degree heat! I think living in San Francisco so long, gave me amnesia of how hot the rest of the world gets. We were melting! I save all the strappy things I don’t wear in SF for my trips out of town, like this one. I got the chance to wear one of my old favorites! This weird tangly top dress I borrowed (but never gave back) from my other sister.

Uniformity: Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology

Back in NYC one more time, to share a little bit of this interesting free fashion museum at FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology) called Uniformity. I’ve never been a fan of uniforms, maybe because I enjoy the freedom of expression fashion allows. This exhibit focuses solely on the fashion created through uniforms! It was quite interesting to realize how prevalent uniforms actually are. From distinguishing teams, jobs, schools, rankings, affiliations, etc. there are SO many reasons to wear uniforms.

And then uniforms bleed into the fashion world – because when you really start paying attention, you will see nods to uniforms on the modern runway! One of the exhibits was a side by side comparison of a vintage Chanel suit and a military suit, it was difficult to tell the difference between the two. It kind of blew my mind! I hope you enjoy these pictures.

It was so cool to see the 1920’s football uniform (seen in the middle) next to a 1960’s vintage uniform inspired sequin dress (on left) and a strange uniform/tropical/grunge outfit (on right) all together from similar influences.

Beauty: Cooper Hewitt Museum

I was given a tip to see the Cooper Hewitt museum on my trip to NYC. It’s not a very large museum, but designed focus and kind of a hidden gem! It was absolutely beautiful inside and out, I was kind of in awe – as it previously was a home! Started out as a mansion and was turned into a Smithsonian design museum. And now I read that it was an Andrew Carnegie home – my library radar loved that!

Here are a few photos from that trip! Enjoy

Manus x Machina: Fashion in an age of technology

So I feel like I’ve died and gone to heaven – I recently have returned from the most amazing, wonderful, whirlwind trip to New York City where I got to wander the streets for four days straight! I ate everything I bookmarked, and visited every museum I fancied. From the top of the Rockefeller center, to subways, I hit high and low, up and down the city!

I would have never in a million years imagined I would get to see one of the Met Costume Institute exhibits, and so shortly after the Met Gala! But I did, the stars lined up for me. The Manus x Machina fashion exhibit was one of the most exquisite ones I have ever seen (and I’ve had my fair share here in San Francisco.) The sub-title, fashion in an age of technology, and title which is a nod to man-made and machine-made gave you a sense of what to expect.

Please enjoy the following photos, a selection of my favorites – but you will be able to see the rest if you click through any of the images to get to my Flickr account.
